Docker Leads OCI Release of v1.0 Runtime and Image Format Specifications

Today marks an important milestone for the Open Container Initiative (OCI) with the release of the OCI v1.0 runtime and image specifications – a journey that Docker has been central in driving and navigating over the last two years. It has been our goal to provide low-level standards as building blocks for the community, customers and the broader industry. To understand the significance of this milestone, let’s take a look at the history of Docker’s growth and progress in developing industry-standard container technologies. The History of Docker Runtime and Image Donations to the OCI Docker’s image format and container runtime quickly emerged as the de facto standard following its release as an open source project in 2013. We recognized the importance of turning it over to a neutral governance body to fuel innovation and prevent fragmentation in the industry. Working Continue reading…

Docker at Nutanix .NEXT Conference – Visit us at Booth #S11

Today marks the start of Nutanix .NEXT Conference in Washington, D.C., the annual conference for Nutanix customers and partners. One of the major themes of the conference is hybrid cloud, and Docker will be there to demonstrate how Docker Enterprise Edition delivers application portability across different infrastructure platforms through a complete enterprise-ready Container as a Service (CaaS) solution for IT. Docker and Nutanix will also be highlighting the Nutanix Docker Volume Plug-in (DVP), a Docker Certified Plugin available in the Docker Store. This plugin connects Docker containers to enterprise-grade persistent storage from Nutanix even as the container is powered on, powered off, or moved to a new host. As part of the certification process, Docker and Nutanix validate that the plugin is built with Docker recommended best practices and passes an additional suite of API compliance testing and vulnerability scanning. Docker Enterprise Edition Now on G-Cloud 9 Framework

Docker Enterprise Edition (EE) has been accepted to G-Cloud 9, further exemplifying Docker’s commitment to delivering tools for application modernization and innovation across the UK public sector. G-Cloud 9 is the UK government’s latest framework that is designed to simplify and accelerate adoption of cloud-based services within the public sector. The inclusion of Docker Enterprise Edition subscriptions, training and Professional Services Organization (PSO) within HM Government Crown Commercial Service’s (CCS) G-Cloud 9 Framework gives UK public sector organizations the opportunity to procure the de facto container solution through the online store known as the “Digital Marketplace” without needing to run a full tender, competition or lengthy procurement process. Docker’s meteoric rise within enterprise-class business has been built on its ability to be agnostic, agile and secure – whether for hybrid cloud migration, modernizing the application stack or adopting a DevOps methodology. Bringing application modernization to Continue reading…

Announcing the Docker Student Developer Kit & Campus Ambassador Program!

For quite some time now we have been receiving daily requests from students all over the world, asking for our help learning Docker, using Docker and teaching their peers how to use Docker. We love their enthusiasm, so we decided it was time to reach out to the student community and give them the helping hand they need! Understanding how to use Docker is now a must have skill for students. Here are 5 reasons why: Understanding how to use Docker is one of the most important skills to learn if you want to advance in a career in tech, according to Business Insider. You can just start coding instead of spending time setting up your environment. You can collaborate easily with your peers and enable seamless group work: Docker eliminates any ‘works on my machine’ issues. Docker allows you Continue reading…

WEBINAR Q&A: Modernize Traditional Applications with Docker Enterprise Edition

This week at DockerCon, we announced the Modernize Traditional Applications (MTA) Program to help enterprises make their existing legacy apps more secure, more efficient and portable to hybrid cloud infrastructure. This webinar covers the importance of “WHY NOW and HOW” to start modernizing traditional applications with Docker Enterprise Edition. Legacy applications often serve critical business needs and have to be maintained for a long time. The maintenance of these applications can become expensive and very time consuming. Some applications may have been written decades ago, grown to millions of lines of code  and the team that built and deployed the app may no longer be at your company. That can pose a challenge for app maintenance, security and support. Docker Enterprise Edition and the Image2Docker Tool presents a unique opportunity to modernize these apps into containers to make them portable, more secure and Continue reading…

Docker for AWS Public Beta

Today, we’re announcing that Docker for AWS is graduating to public beta, just in time for AWS re:Invent. Docker for AWS is a great way for ops to setup and maintain secure and scalable Docker deployments on AWS. With Docker for AWS, IT ops teams can: Deploy a standard Docker platform to ensure teams can seamlessly move apps from developer laptops to Dockerized staging and production environments, without risk of incompatibilities or lock-in. Integrate deeply with underlying infrastructure to ensure Docker takes advantage of the host environment’s native capabilities and exposes a familiar interface to administrators. Deploy the platform to all the places where you want to run Dockerized apps, simply and efficiently Make sure the latest and greatest Docker versions are available for the hardware, OSs, and infrastructure you love, and provide solid upgrade paths from one Docker version to Continue reading…
