Biogen: Data Science and Docker Swarm

written by Theo Platt, Associate Director, Biogen and Karl Gutwin, Senior Data Architect, Biogen The Data Sciences department at Biogen has been using Docker and watching the (r)evolution for a couple of years. Last year, as our experience with Docker grew and the use cases expanded, we built our own early Docker Swarm cluster with homegrown orchestration capabilities. Through cutting-edge science and medicine, Biogen discovers, develops and delivers worldwide innovative therapies for people living with serious neurological, autoimmune and rare diseases. Founded in 1978, Biogen is one of the world’s oldest independent biotechnology companies and patients worldwide benefit from its leading multiple sclerosis and innovative hemophilia therapies.

#SwarmWeek: It’s a Wrap – Thanks Y’all!

Thank You. Wow what a week! When we first brainstormed Swarm Week, it was to help spread awareness of Docker Swarm to the community. What we did not anticipate was the tremendous support from the community to proactively share your knowledge, experiences and experiments with each other so publicly. We had a lot of fun starting new conversations and learning about what people are doing with Swarm. Our hope is that this week inspires you to try something new and push your Swarm to the limit. If you missed any part of Swarm Week, here is the recap of some useful tutorials, case studies and articles designed to enhance your knowledge of Docker Swarm.

#SwarmWeek: Realtime Cluster Monitoring with Docker Swarm and Riemann

Lately I’ve become fascinated with Riemann, a piece of software written in Clojure for the purpose of supervising the health of distributed systems. Created by Kyle Kingsbury (a.k.a. aphyr) of Jepsen fame, Riemann is a powerful tool for montioring, processing, and responding to information from your cattle herd.

#SwarmWeek: Five Tips for the Advanced Swarm User

Today in Swarm Week, we’re getting more advanced with Swarm. In addition to orchestration tutorial video featuring Jérôme Petazzoni, we wanted to share some tips for you to try as you start getting familiar with creating and using Swarm clusters.

#SwarmWeek: Advanced Orchestration with Docker Swarm

Jérôme Petazzoni, Docker’s tinkerer extraordinaire, has been running full day on container orchestration with the full Docker stack. The whole workshop uses a demo application using DockerCoin (not a real currency, he tells us). It’s got with web frontends, web services, background workers, and stateful data stores. This is all to give you the experience of running a full scale app in production.

#SwarmWeek: Docker Swarm Exceeds Kubernetes Performance at Scale

There are people who will tell you that the community has made up its mind when it comes to container orchestration. The reality could not be further from the truth. A recent survey, of over 500 respondents, addressing questions about DevOps, microservices and the public cloud revealed a three way orchestration race between Docker Swarm, Google Kubernetes, and Amazon EC2 Container Service (ECS).

#SwarmWeek: SA Homes Loans Trusts Docker Datacenter with Embedded Swarm To Enable Microservices and Portability

SA Home Loans is a mortgage finance provider dedicated to dedicated purpose: to offer our customers the best in every service – from origination and credit approval through to registration and ongoing loan servicing. The company was launched to South African home owners in February 1999 and in these short years, have grown to become the country’s fifth largest home loans provider. Software is a key tool that our employees use to facilitate these great services to our customers. Recently we made a conscious decision to adopt a microservices architecture, to give us more flexibility and agility in development and deployments. We decided on Docker as our preferred platform, as containerizing our .NET services would allow them to be immutable and easily transferable across our development to deployment pipeline. We soon realised that we had the potential to have over Continue reading…

#SwarmWeek: HealthDirect Uses Docker Swarm for Blue Green Deployments

Healthdirect Australia provides all Australians with access to health information and advice, no matter where they live, or what time of the day or night it is, they can talk to a health professional, find trusted advice online about the appropriate care for their health issue and find the closest local services that are open when they need them. Our Docker journey originally started with the open source edition and early on we invested in building out our own tooling to support infrastructure and application provisioning. Recently we transitioned to Docker Datacenter consisting of Engine, Trusted Registry and Universal Control Plane (which comes with Swarm). Having an integrated end-to-end platform with management, plugins and ecosystem integrations available right out of the box was the deciding factor for us. Docker Datacenter provides us with a solid foundation for our application Continue reading…
