Try on Desktop Button for Docker Hub

We’re excited to announce a new feature on Docker Hub (for Mac users right now) – a button that pulls, configures and runs Docker containers for you on your desktop in a single click.

1

We do this by using an external protocol handler that talks to Kitematic, a desktop GUI app for Docker. This is the first step of connecting Kitematic to the Docker Hub!

Here’s how it works:

Clicking on the button will first prompt you to download Kitematic, if you don’t have the latest version installed.

K

Download and install Kitematic, click on the “Try on Desktop” button again. Kitematic will ask you for confirmation.

3

Click on Confirm, Kitematic will download the redis image and run it in a container.

4

Success! You now have Redis running locally! It’s that easy to get a container running on your machine in seconds without having to use the command line.

The button on Docker Hub is currently in beta and only available for a curated list of popular official images that work well with Kitematic, and will soon be available for other public and private images as well.

Not to sound like Clippy, but In your post the screenshot says. “Looks like you don’t Kitematic installed…” did you mean, “Looks like you don’t have Kitematic installed” I am assuming this issue applied to the page the screenshot was taken from as well.

This is a nice feature for someone (unlike me) who prefers UI over CLI. Another feather in docker’s cap. Hopefully, soon we will have this feature for Windows OS too.

Kitematic doesn’t work with VMWare Fusion unfortunately.

Is this fully rolled out yet? Went to try it out on https://registry.hub.docker.com/u/cantino/huginn/ in Version 42.0.2311.90 (64-bit) on OSX and no button showed up.
