Secured at Docker – Diogo Mónica and Nathan McCauley

Diogo Mónica

I’m thrilled to officially announce that Nathan McCauley and I are joining Docker to lead the Security Team.

Back in 2011, Nathan and I were fortunate enough to join Square just as it was picking up steam. Square disrupted traditional point-of-sale systems by allowing anyone to take credit-card payments on their phone. And with great, disruptive ideas came new and interesting security engineering challenges.

During our time at Square we built a wide range of different systems, from an general purpose cryptography infrastructure, a fully-fledged mutual-TLS micro-service architecture and a small end-to-end encrypted credit-card reader. All of these systems allow Square to move hundreds of millions of dollars per day. We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved at Square but a new opportunity presented itself.

Docker is our new challenge. One of the main reasons why we are so excited to join Docker is the opportunity to work on transformative technology. We’ve built, managed and secured distributed systems at scale, and now with Docker we can take what we’ve learned and build security directly into the distributed application platform.  We are looking forward to working with the Docker community and ecosystem to achieve this together so everyone benefits from a secure-by-default foundation.

We’re incredibly excited for this opportunity and will start by embedding ourselves in the core engineering team to learn and help with the ongoing work on distribution and trust.

Over the coming weeks, expect a series of blogposts with deep dives into infrastructure security, container security and overall best practices on securely managing your infrastructure. In the meantime, make sure you take a peek at the new namespaces and discovery proposal, or interact with us on IRC (#docker-security).

Oh, and don’t forget to follow us on twitter! (@diogomonica @nathanmccauley)

  1. Very cool to see new talents joining !
With new paradigm come new challenges. I don’t know who said ” when we invented the train we invented derailment too”.

  2. Congrats Diogo great to hear about your new role at Docker. Keep up the good work 🙂 come visit me and mat in sunny UK sometime! 😉

  3. Hi Diego, Nathan,

good to hear Docker is stepping up their security. Can you tell me how files within the container/ or container itself can be secured through encrpytion. I don't want ppl to see the code which i have stored in a container. Any suggestions from your side?
