Docker Distributed System Summit videos & podcast episodes

Following LinuxCon Europe in Berlin last week, we organized a first of its kind Docker event called Docker Distributed Systems Summit. This two day event was an opportunity for core Docker engineers and Docker experts from the community to learn, collaborate, problem-solve and hack around the next generation of distributed systems in areas such as orchestration, networking, security and storage. More specifically, the goal of the summit was to dive deep into Docker’s infrastructure plumbing tools and internals: SwarmKit, InfraKit, Hyperkit, Notary, libnetwork, IPVS, Raft, TUF and provide attendees with the working knowledge of how to leverage these tools while building their own systems. We’re happy to share with you all the videos recordings, slides and audio files available as #dockercast episodes! Docker All The Things at OSCON!

Last week, the Docker team headed to Austin for OSCON for a week packed full of containers and open source! The official conference agenda featured many Docker talks including a keynote session (complete with live open sourcing of the core technology that powers the Docker for Mac and Windows desktop applications!) from Solomon Hykes, two packed workshops with Jérôme Petazzoni and a full day of sessions on containers with talks from Rackspace, IBM, Datadog, Avant, Couchbase and of course Docker. The local Docker Austin meetup group hosted an evening event on Tuesday with talks on Docker Security Scanning and Docker and unikernels. The Docker team also staffed a booth in the expo hall to answer questions from OSCON attendees. Below are the slides from most of the Docker talks – we’ll keep adding new ones as they get posted!

Docker Online Meetup #31: Unikernels

On Wednesday, we hosted a Docker Online Meetup that was all about Unikernels! Amir Chaudhry, Richard Mortier and Martin Lucina joined us and presented an overview on Unikernels including a demo of Unikernels and Docker. The recorded video and slides from the meetup are available to watch below. Unikernels are constructed by combining application code with only the operating system components necessary for that code to run. The result is a highly specialized, single-purpose application which can be deployed directly to the cloud or onto IoT-like devices. Unikernels reduce software complexity by only including code that is required, resulting in portable applications with much smaller footprints and fast boot times.

Unikernel Systems Joins Docker

I’m happy to announce today that Unikernel Systems is part of Docker! Unikernels compile your source code into a custom operating system that includes only the functionality required by the application logic. That makes them small, fast, and improves efficiency. Unikernel Systems was formed last year to build tools that allow developers to take advantage of a growing number of unikernel projects.
