Proactive Ops for Container Orchestration Environments: Monitoring and Logging Strategies with Docker Enterprise

Over the last decade, the popularity of microservices and highly-scalable systems has increased, leading to an overall increase in the complexity of applications that are now distributed heavily across the network with many moving pieces and potential failure modes. This architectural evolution has changed the monitoring requirements and led to a need for scalable and insightful tooling and practices to enable us to better identify, debug and resolve issues in our systems before they impact the business and our end users (internal and/or external). I recently gave a talk at DockerCon SF 18 discussing functionality in Docker Enterprise that enables operators to more easily monitor their container platform environment, along with some key metrics and best practices to triage and remediate issues before they cause downtime. You can watch the full talk here:   Monitoring Methodologies One of the most Continue reading…

Docker SF Chapter Meetup: BuildKit and Container Orchestration

Last week, we had a great turnout for the Docker San Francisco chapter event at HQ! The meetup was focused on two of the most popular talks from DockerCon on BuildKit and container orchestration with Kubernetes and Docker Swarm. The purpose was to give people who couldn’t attend these talks a chance to hear to hear them live,  provide the opportunity to ask the speakers questions and network with other members of the container ecosystem. ‘Introduction to BuildKit: the Next Generation Builder Component’ Watch Tibor Vass’ Presentation First, we had Tibor Vass, a software engineer on the Engine Team at Docker and maintainer of the Docker project since 2014, take the podium with his talk ‘Introduction to BuildKit: the Next Generation Builder Component’. In this talk, Tibor went into detail about the latest developments around the builder component of the Docker Platform including Continue reading…

Simplifying the Management of Kubernetes with Docker Enterprise Edition

Back in October at DockerCon Europe, we announced that Docker will be delivering a  seamless and simplified integration of Kubernetes into the Docker platform. By integrating Kubernetes with Docker EE, we provide the choice to use Kubernetes and/or Docker Swarm for orchestration while maintaining the consistent developer to operator workflow users have come to expect from Docker. For users, this means they get an unmodified, conformant version of Kubernetes with the added value of the Docker platform including security, management, a familiar developer workflow and tooling, broad ecosystem compatibility and an adherence to industry standards including containerd and the OCI. One of the biggest questions that we’ve been asked since we announced support for Kubernetes at  DockerCon EU –  what does this mean for an operations team that is already using Kubernetes to orchestrate containers within their enterprise? The answer is really Continue reading…

The Enterprise IT checklist for Docker Operations

At Docker, we believe the best insights come from the developers and IT pros using the Docker platform every day. Since the launch of Docker Enterprise Edition, we learned three things from our customers. First, a top goal in enterprise IT is to deliver value to customers (internal business units or external clients)…and to do so fast. Second, most enterprises believe that Docker is at the center of their IT platform. Finally, most enterprises’ biggest challenge is moving their containerized applications to production in time to prove value. My DockerCon talk focused on addressing the third item, which seems to be a critical one for many of our customers. In our recent customer engagements, we’ve seen a pattern of common challenges when designing and deploying Docker in an enterprise environment. Particularly, customers are struggling to find best practices to speed Continue reading…

Docker Datacenter adds enterprise orchestration, security policy and refreshed UI

Today we are excited to introduce new additions to Docker Datacenter, our Container as a Service (CaaS) platform for enterprise IT and application teams. Docker Datacenter provides an integrated platform for developers and IT operations teams to collaborate securely on the application lifecycle. Built on the foundation of Docker Engine, Docker Datacenter (DDC) also provides integrated orchestration, management and security around managing resources like access, images, applications, networks and more across the cluster. This latest release of Docker Datacenter includes a number of new features and improvements focused in the following areas: Enterprise orchestration and operations to make running and operating multi container applications simple, secure and scalable Integrated end to end security to cover all of the components and people that interact with the application pipeline User experience and performance improvements ensure that even the most complex operations are handled efficiently Continue reading…
